A Historic Agreement Signed at the White House
Nearly forty years of violent clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan have come to an unexpected close with the signing of a peace accord, witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The agreement marks a turning point in South Caucasus diplomacy, notably excluding Russia—a former key player in the region whose influence has waned in recent years noted Euronews.
As a reminder, tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan surged after a deadly police raid in Yekaterinburg on June 27, where two Azerbaijani citizens died in custody. Baku summoned the Russian ambassador and demanded accountability. Days later, Azerbaijan arrested a Russian journalist linked to state media and intelligence, along with 15 other Russian nationals, deepening the diplomatic rift.
“We are today establishing peace in the South Caucasus,” Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev said. “Today we writing a great new history.”
Pashinyan Invokes Peace and Faith
Armenian Premier Pashinyan added that this agreement represented “opening a chapter of peace“. “
Sixteen hours before the peace summit, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared a Bible verse on Facebook: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

This gesture clearly reflects Pashinyan’s commitment to peace and reconciliation.
Following the signing of the historic peace agreement in Washington on August 8, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared his reflections on social media. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed confidence that the accord—signed alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump—marks the beginning of a new chapter for the South Caucasus.
Pashinyan tweeted: “Today’s declaration… gives confidence that we are opening a chapter of peace, prosperity, security & economic cooperation in the South Caucasus.”
Results of the agreement
The centerpiece of the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace agreement is the creation of a new transit corridor through southern Armenia, officially named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). Under the terms of the deal, the United States will operate and develop the Zangezur Corridor until the year 2125, with the possibility of extension. This 99-year arrangement not only symbolizes a shift in regional influence—diminishing Russia’s role—but also promises to unlock vital trade, energy, and connectivity opportunities across the South Caucasus according to Popli, N. (2025, August 8).
Alen Simonyan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, for his part, expressed deep optimism following the peace agreement. In a post on social media, he declared: “There will be no more war. Our children will no longer be sacrificed. There will be no corridor — the roads are opening. All roads and borders in the region will be opened.”
Global Messages of Hope and Reconciliation
The European Union has welcomed the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace agreement signed in Washington, describing it as a “major development” for the South Caucasus. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting normalization efforts, stating: “The EU will continue to support normalization efforts to achieve sustainable peace, stability and prosperity for the region.”
Türkiye has expressed strong support for the peace agreement signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington. In an official statement issued on August 8, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the progress toward lasting peace and praised the commitment recorded during the summit. “At a time when international conflicts and crises are intensifying, this step constitutes a highly significant development for the promotion of regional peace and stability,” the statement read. Türkiye also commended the role of the U.S. administration and emphasized that a historic opportunity has emerged for the South Caucasus to achieve peace and prosperity.
Messages of hope and reconciliation have poured in from both Armenian and Azerbaijani communities, as well as from leaders around the world. The Azerbaijani Ambassador Leyla Abdullayeva to France tweeted: “May peace be lasting and pave the way for regional prosperity!” This sentiment reflects the growing international support for a new era of cooperation in the South Caucasus.
In conclusion, the normalization of Armenian–Azerbaijani relations and the establishment of lasting peace could have a profoundly positive impact on both economies. Enhanced cooperation in transportation is likely to bring major benefits to Armenia and its neighbors.
