The history of relations between Türkiye and Austria has deep and longstanding roots. The cities of Istanbul and Vienna, representing these two countries from past to present, have always been closely connected through political, economic, social, and cultural interactions throughout history. This bond continues to this day.
A recent event organized by the Austrian Cultural Office narrated the shared story of these two cities. The event took place within the framework of the “Our Common History Project.”

The project aims to make visible, reinterpret, and present from a contemporary perspective the shared historical narratives between Europe and the Ottoman/Turkish world. Its purpose is to keep cultural memory alive and to strengthen dialogue in Austrian–Türkiye relations.
In this context, Çınar Sözer, who currently serves as the President of the Austrian Alumni Association in Vienna, delivered an engaging presentation on art and shared history at the historic Austrian Embassy building in Yeniköy.
During the presentation, he elaborated on how and where the relations between Istanbul and Vienna began, as well as the various elements they encompassed. This network of relations—embracing history, politics, trade, and art—demonstrated just how close the two countries truly are.
In his talk, Sözer offered a broad perspective extending from literature to music, from diplomatic ties to everyday life practices. His engaging narration allowed the audience to vividly imagine the past, turning the presentation into something more than a simple transfer of information—it acquired a cinematic quality.
The event, held in the embassy’s famous chandeliered hall, continued with an enjoyable concert following the presentation. Defne Aydın, a soprano living in Vienna, contributed to the artistic dimension of the evening with her powerful voice. She was accompanied on piano by Nehir Karadağ and Duru Karadağ. The melodies of a refined selection ranging from Mozart to Fazıl Say resonated through the spacious hall of the Austrian Consulate on a beautiful Istanbul night.
Events like this aim to keep cultural memory alive and to strengthen dialogue in Austrian–Türkiye relations. The unifying power of art truly has the ability to bridge distances.
