Shusha, July 17 — In a significant cultural and diplomatic event, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Əliyev and Chairman of the People’s Council of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the historic Mehmandarov estate complex in Shusha.

The dignitaries were briefed on the rich history of the complex, which includes large and small residential buildings, a family mosque, and a spring. Built in the 18th century by members of the Mehmandarov family, the estate is considered one of the rare examples of Azerbaijan’s architectural heritage.

The complex was meticulously restored by the Heydar Əliyev Foundation, with renovation efforts beginning in October 2021. Restoration included the family mosque and the spring, whose roof was returned to its original form. The spring was officially reopened during President Əliyev’s visit in September 2022. On May 9, 2023, President Əliyev and First Lady Mehriban Əliyeva attended the grand reopening of the estate.

Following the restoration, a museum exhibition titled “Home of a Karabakh Nobleman” was established within the complex. The exhibition recreates the interior and lifestyle of a Karabakh nobleman from the late 19th to early 20th century, featuring over 150 antique items.

Later the same day, President Əliyev and Chairman Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the iconic Cıdır Plain, where a presentation of Karabakh horses was held. In a gesture of friendship and cultural exchange, President Əliyev gifted a Karabakh horse named “Dostluq” (“Friendship”) to Chairman Berdiməhəmmədov.
