Turkmenistan – UN: A new stage in the history of cooperation, writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

On August 3, 2025, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Turkmenistan to participate in the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, held on the Caspian Sea coast.

The National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, warmly welcomed the UN Secretary-General, expressing his pleasure at receiving him on the sacred land of Turkmenistan.

Heads of state and government from several countries also arrived in Awaza to attend the Forum, including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Armenia, Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, the Vice President of Malawi, the President of São Tomé and Príncipe, and the Prime Minister of Mongolia.

During the welcoming ceremony at the airport, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty emphasized that the unanimous adoption of the resolution titled “Additional Information on the Modalities of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries” at the 63rd plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly reflects the high international standing of independent and permanently neutral Turkmenistan.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his deep honor in participating in this globally significant forum hosted by Turkmenistan, a country committed to harmonious development.

It was noted that the agreements to be reached during the Conference, which addresses pressing global issues, are expected to positively influence the economies of countries worldwide.

The National Leader of the Turkmen people highlighted the importance of exchanging views and making strategic decisions regarding the future development of landlocked states. He stated that hosting this high-level forum under the auspices of the United Nations is a testament to the global trust placed in Turkmenistan.

The Conference is expected to enhance the economic potential of landlocked developing countries and foster interregional and international cooperation in trade and economic affairs. Parallel events, meetings, and negotiations among relevant institutions are also scheduled as part of the Forum.

Special attention was drawn to the significance of holding the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in the year marking the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. For three decades, Turkmenistan has worked in close cooperation with the UN to promote peace and development. Today, the country is actively collaborating with the UN to improve connectivity for landlocked nations.

Turkmenistan, as a promoter of peace and dialogue, is becoming a key partner of the United Nations in advancing global connectivity. The choice of Awaza as the venue is particularly symbolic, as the Turkmenbashi port connects Asia to Europe via the Caspian Sea, serving as a central hub of the Middle Corridor.

The Conference, held on the Caspian coast, will address current global economic challenges and explore effective solutions, opening new opportunities for international transport partnerships.

Wishes for success were extended to the Forum, which covers vital topics in transport and logistics development, as well as transport diplomacy. It was affirmed that the decisions made will contribute to the harmonious development of participating countries.

Once again welcoming the distinguished guest to Turkmen soil, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty expressed gratitude for his efforts in organizing this world-class Forum in Turkmenistan.
