Washington, D.C. — President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, arrived in Washington for a working visit at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a pivotal moment in ongoing efforts to broker peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews, President Aliyev was welcomed by senior U.S. government officials, signaling the importance of the visit. According to The Washington Times, President Trump is set to host both Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House for trilateral peace talks aimed at resolving long-standing tensions in the South Caucasus.

Thanks to assertive diplomacy, strategic energy resources, and a proactive foreign policy, Azerbaijan is expanding its partnerships worldwide. On June 10, 2025, President Ilham Aliyev met with his Armenian counterpart, Nikol Pashinyan, to discuss a historic peace agreement. This rapprochement reflects a broader trend: a state determined to play a central role in both regional and global affairs.

The meeting, scheduled for August 8, is part of Trump’s broader initiative to reassert the United States’ role in global conflict resolution. The talks are expected to focus on promoting peace, prosperity, and economic cooperation in the region, with speculation that a formal peace agreement may be announced.

Adviser to the Academy of Public Administration under the President and Chairman of the Baku Political Scientists Club, Zaur Mammadov, emphasized in a statement to APA that Ilham Aliyev’s visit to the United States, amid Trump’s return to the presidency, marks the beginning of a new stage of strategic cooperation in Azerbaijan–U.S. relations after a long period of tension.

“For many years, Azerbaijan–U.S. relations have been tense and stagnant. Especially during Joe Biden’s presidency, Washington’s open support for Armenia and its biased policy towards Azerbaijan led to a crisis level in the relationship. During these years, Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan made several visits to the U.S., while no such visits were observed from the Azerbaijani side.

However, this dynamic changed with Donald Trump’s election as president in November 2024. Trump’s emphasis on personal relationships and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s previously expressed positive opinions about his election created a foundation for mutual understanding between the two leaders.

In this context, Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Washington is not only a diplomatic event but also an indicator of the transition of relations to a strategic level. The meeting is expected to address issues such as energy cooperation, communication projects, and regional security. This visit holds significant importance in terms of ensuring stability in the South Caucasus and strengthening Azerbaijan’s geopolitical role,” Mammadov stated according to Mammadov, Z. (2025, August 7).

President Trump has frequently touted his diplomatic achievements, claiming to have “stopped about five wars” and positioning himself as a global peacemaker. Several world leaders—including those from Pakistan and Israel—have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts to mediate international conflicts.

According to The Washington Times, Trump’s administration views the upcoming Caucasus summit as a testament to his negotiation skills and a chance to reinforce U.S. influence in a region where Russian sway has waned.

A Turning Point for the South Caucasus?

The trilateral meeting comes after years of intermittent conflict over Karabakh, a region internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Following Azerbaijan’s military operations in 2020 and 2023, the region returned to Baku’s control.

While a draft peace agreement was announced earlier this year, a final signing date remains elusive. The Washington summit may represent the most significant diplomatic breakthrough yet.
